The Free Cairo Sufi Show at the Wikalat Al Ghuri

The bi-weekly Al Ghuri sufi show is a colourful spectacular of sufi tradition combined with Egyptian showmanship and flamboyance. The result is loud, colourful and extremely entertaining.

The show takes place at the Wikalat al Ghuri, a 16th century market place built by the Sultan Qunsuwah Al Ghouri and located opposite the mosque and mausoleum of the same name.

The domed roof and four floors of stunning Islamic architecture host the performers and their packed out crowds twice a week each Wednesday and Saturday evening.

Although the Al Ghuri Sufi Show starts at 1930, get there early to avoid disappointment as the seats go quickly and even the standing areas around the side and rear of the main hall fill eventually.

Visitor to the Al Ghuri Sufi Show can expect a medley of dervish inspired dance, eerie sufi vocals all accompanied by masterful percussion.

Yes it is touristy (but full of Egyptians too) and tongue in cheek at times, but thoroughly entertaining and delivered with talent, emotion and skill.

Location

Wikalat al Ghuri is easily reached by foot from Khan Al Khalili market or from Islamic Cairo and is located on the south side of the pedestrian bridge that crosses Sharia Al Azhar.

If travelling by taxi, ask to be dropped off at Wikalat al Ghuri (the driver should know it) or alternatively simply ask for Khan Al Khalili market and walk. They would often drop you at this footbridge anyway.
