Fryal Gardens Aswan

If you keep walking south from Egypt Air, you’ll stumble upon the quiet and secluded Fryal gardens. Built by King Farouk and dedicated to his eldest daughter, the gardens are located on the river bank opposite the Coptic Church.

Although the selection of bird and tree life may not be as diverse at it is in the botanical Gardens on Kitchener Island, Fryal Gardens has spectacular views across the Nile to Elephantine Island, and more importantly, is about the only place in town free from touts and felucca captains.

Locals like to come here for picnics or just to while away the hours on a bench. It’s a good place to meet everyday Egyptians, and if you’re lucky you may bump into retired scuba diving instructor Ismael Habulkani, who comes here most days to relax and talk.

Entrance costs just 5LE. There is a café in the centre of the park with (reasonably) clean sit down toilets.
