Sharm El Sheikh Travel
Sharm El Sheikh is the most famous tourist resort
in Egypt . Located on the southern most tip of the Sinai Peninsular, it’s home to some of the world’s best diving spots,
the Ras Mohammed National Park, and an immeasurable number of luxury
hotels, bars, pubs, discos, golf courses and casinos.
It is also where the world’s politicians choose
to meet when visiting Egypt .
The foundations for Sharm El Sheikh were laid by
the Israelis during their fifteen year occupation of the peninsular. They founded the settlement of Ofira. When
Sinai was handed back to the Egyptians in 1982 as a result of the
Camp David Accords, the settlement was repopulated by Egyptians, and has continued to grow with some momentum
ever since.
Sharm El Sheikh is actually comprised of two
adjacent bays, Sharm al-Maya (the original settlement of Ofira) and Nama Bay
located 6km to the North. As the two developments continue to
grow towards each other they edge ever closer to merging into a single resort strip.
Visitors to the area are mostly package
holiday makers who arrive on direct charter flights from
Europe
. With most hotels being four and five star, independent
travellers tend to head up the coast to the more relaxed, budget friendly beach resorts of Nuweiba and Dahab.
A ferry operates between Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. Taking about 1 ½ hours on a good day, it’s the fastest and most comfortable
way to/from the mainland, and allows the independent traveller to plot a circular route between
Cairo, Sinai, and the Upper Egyptian cities or Luxor and Aswan.
