Kitchener Island Aswan

Kitchener Island, Aswan

The Island of Plants, also known as Kitchener Island, is located on a craggy rock on the west side of Elphantine Island.

The shady, botanical gardens here were once the property of Consul General Kitchener, who was rewarded with the Island for his hard work in the Sudan. Kitchener then had flora imported from all over the colonial world and beyond.

The gardens are looked after, and well suited for a pleasant stroll, especially in the summer when they are almost empty. More attractive still are the views from the island across the river to Elephantine Island and the East bank.

Entrance costs 10LE. There are motor ferries from the East Bank that arrange transfers (circa 5LE) or alternatively one can visit as part of a felucca trip.
