Summer in Aswan

Summer in Aswan

Summer in Aswan is hot. Between June and August every year, even the Egyptians make their escape to the northern beaches. The afternoon sun is unrelenting, and the breeze across the Nile (if there is one) can at times feel like a hair dryer set to full power.

It’s certainly not for everyone but, if the idea of a little heat doesn’t deter you, summer in Aswan is just about bearable. More than that though, it can also be one of the most peaceful and cost effective times to enjoy the city.

The heat means fewer tourists, and therefore fewer people to spoil your panoramic photos and tranquil evening ambience. It means no queues at tourist sites, and it means that everything is up for negotiation like never before. From Nile Cruises to hotel rooms, with so many half empty you can make significant savings.

The one downside of visiting Aswan this time of year (apart from the heat if that’s an issue), is that with fewer tourist, there are fewer targets for the riverside touts. A short stroll can be a stressful experience if you let it get to you. When you feel your patience waning, suck it up and take strength from the magnificent riverside vistas.

Temperatures can reach upwards of 41 degrees Celsius during summer in Aswan, so it’s important that you go about things the right way.

Some tips…

Rise early

The hottest part of the day is from 12 noon onwards. Rise as early as possible and get all your sightseeing done by midday.

Take a Siesta

This leaves you the rest of the day to take an extended siesta and hang out at shady riverside boat cafes like the Aswan Moon.

Invest in Air Conditioning

Don’t cut corners and settle for a fan. There are plenty of cheap hotels in Aswan (especially in the Summer time) that have rooms equipped with AC. Check it works sufficiently before unpacking.

Drink Lots of Water

Drink before you get thirsty. Keep yourself hydrated as never before. Use re-hydration sachets if necessary. Read about staying healthy in Egypt

Protect yourself from the Sun

You’d be surprised how quickly the sunshine can knock the wind out of your felucca sails when you don’t wear a hat, even if you have a full head of bushy hair. Get yourself a hat of some description and if necessary drench it in water before wearing.

Know your exit strategy

If it all gets too much you can always leave. Trains, buses, feluccas and ferries depart Aswan daily for other cities and towns. Just be sure to head north!
