December in Egypt

December in Egypt

Weather and Temperatures

December is part of the winter peak season in Egypt, with temperatures low enough to enjoy sightseeing and outdoor activities in much of the country.

It’s a good time to be hiking in Egypt and the Western desert is once again accessible (although temperatures at night can reach well below freezing).

That said peak season is much busier than the summer months, and prices are a little higher in response to this demand.

If you’re primarily motivated by sunshine, perfect tanning weather cannot be guaranteed at the Red Sea resorts.

Hurghada typically sees temperatures of between 15-25 ̊ C and in Sharm El Sheikh the climate is a little warmer at between 19-28 ̊ C. Skies are sometime overcast and chilly winds are not uncommon.

Aswan, usually Egypt’s hottest city, is much more bearable at this time of year with temperatures between 17-31 C.

Cairo usually sees temperatures of between 17-31 ̊ C during this time.

Holidays and Special Events

7th December 2010 Islamic New Year – New Year as dictated by the lunar calendar.

23rd December 2010 Victory Day – Celebrates the end of the Suez Crisis (1956) when the Israelis - backed by the French and British - were forced to withdraw from the Suez region under US pressure. More profoundly however it signified the end of European colonial power in the region.

25th December - So strictly speaking Christmas is not an Egyptian holiday but spending Christmas in Egypt remains a unique and enjoyable experience.
