August in Egypt

Weather and Temperatures

Like July, the heat in Egypt in August is so oppressive in much of the country that the Egyptians flock north to Alexandria (23 and 29 ̊ C) and the other northern beaches, where the Mediterranean breeze makes the temperatures about bearable.

August and July are off-peak as far as tourism is concerned so if the heat doesn’t phase you, these months are relatively peaceful and cost effective. The dearth in tourism meaning that prices are lower and everything is up for negotiation.

Cairo is an unpleasant place to be around this period (21 – 36 ̊ C), the humidity seemingly higher in the city. Although the heat in Aswan (26 – 41 ̊ C) is dry, the breeze blowing across the Nile can at times feel like a hair dryer set to full power.

If you’re agenda includes sightseeing around the various antiquities in upper Egypt, expect to rise before dawn and finish your excursions by early afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.

The Red Sea resorts are pleasant enough if you don’t plan on doing too much.

Temperatures in Hurghada range between 32 – 35 ̊ C and in Sharm El Sheikh 27 – 28 ̊ C. Temperatures inland on the Sinai peninsular and the St Catherine’s protectorate are lower at between 18 – 32 ̊ C.

The Western Desert is not really an option during this period due to the heat, and there is a cessation of any tourist activity in the region.
