April in Egypt

Weather and Temperature

Visitors to Egypt in April can expect to enjoy a pleasant climate throughout much of the country. The weather is fine but less oppressive than in May and onwards, and the cooler breeze means that sightseeing can still be comfortably accomplished without the need for super early starts or long midday siestas.

The spring months are also a good time for hiking in Egypt and ideal for excursions into the Western desert, where temperatures are neither too hot in the daytime nor freezing at night.

Typically the Nile Delta is the coolest region with temperatures of between 13-21 ̊ C in Alexandria and 11-24 ̊ C in Cairo. Hurghada temperature wavers between 12-23 ̊ C and Aswan starts heating up nicely with temperatures traditionally ranging from 14-31 ̊ C. Sharm el Sheikh will likely see temperatures of between 14-25 ̊ C with inland Sinai being cooler.

Spring is also the time when the 'Khamsin' Wind blows from the desert in the South. The Khamsin wind is a suffocatingly hot desert wind that brings with it sand and dust and debris and more.

Khamsin is arabic for 'fifty' as it said to blow for fifty days. The reality is that during early April and sometimes early March it actually blows for a few hours once or twice a week.

Holidays and Special Events

25th April Sinai Liberation Day - Sinai Liberation Day celebrates the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsular (after 15 years of occupation) in 1982 as a result of the Camp David Agreements and the peace treaty signed between Israel and Egypt.

25th April 2011 Sham al Naseem – The day that Egypt’s Coptic Christian population celebrate Easter in Egypt. Although the date changes depending on the lunar calendar, it always falls sometime between March and April. This is the most important date in the Coptic calendar, and mass is held to signify the end of a period of fasting during which time Copts consume only a vegan diet.
