Sharm El Sheikh to Upper Egypt

Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo and Upper Egypt

(Sharm El Sheikh - Sinai - Cairo - Aswan - Luxor- Sharm El Sheikh)

Summary

A two week itinerary well suited to anyone that has booked budget flights in and out of Sharm El Sheikh and who wants to see as much of the country as possible in this period.

Description

Spend a day in Sharm El Sheikh before heading up the coast to one of the less developed resorts such as Dahab or Nuweiba.

You can use either of these as a base from which to explore Sinai or simply as a relaxing, chilled beach resort in which to unwind.

Have you fill or snorkelling, trekking, camel riding etc for a few days before taking the overnight bus journey to Cairo.

You can then spend two days in Cairo enjoying the pyramids, museums, markets etc (See Cairo Itineraries) before taking an overnight train journey south to Aswan (or alternatively take a cheap flight to Aswan).

Aswan is one of the most scenic places in Egypt and ideal for enjoying the Nile by Sail boat. If you have time it is possible to arrange a trip to Abu Simbel from here (see aswan excursions).

After no more than two days, take a 5 hour train journey north to Luxor (perhaps broken up with a visit to Kom Ombo or Edfu).

You’ll have two days in Luxor (see Luxor itineraries), the former site of Thebes  and the capital of the Ancient Egyptian Empire.

On day 12 it’s time to start thinking about going home. Take a bus to Hurghada (5 hours) from where you can catch the ferry back to Sharm El Sheikh (1.5hours).

This is a circular route and works just as well in reverse. You should just consider what you want to do first:  beaches and deserts or monuments and wonders?

It’s a tough one I know.
